Clear thinking . . . with four characters in play

5 January 2026

Like many folk, I used the holiday season to catch up on some reading.

I was thrilled to finally dive into ‘Whole Brain Living’ by Dr Jill Bolte Taylor. The book introduces you to the four characters – yes four! – that we all have in our brains.

Not only is her life story inspiring, her ability to bring each part of our brain to life and explain how they drive our decisions, actions, moods and relationships was brilliant. Her explanation about how the characters influence each other and impact how we show up as leaders, fantastic!

The book is also a powerful reminder that if we consciously engage our whole brain, we can make clearer decisions, interact more meaningfully with others and give the best of ourselves at home, work and play.

I was already a great advocate for the power of clear thinking. This read has given me even more insights, skills and inspiration. Not only will I be incorporating snippets of Whole Brain Living into my coaching and work with clients, I am practising ‘brain huddles’ every day and sharing bits with my kids, friends and family.

A highly recommended read to kick start the year.

A time for clarity, not simplicity

17 December 2025

As I reflect on recent events, I keep coming back to one uncomfortable question: have we lost the ability to have complex, respectful, hard conversations?

We oversimplify and reduce multi-layered, complex and deeply personal issues into hashtags and Instagram posts. Quick promises are made to appease. People lean into a short narrative that suits them in the moment and then share it without thinking. â€‹

There is no easy way through some of the challenges society and organisations face: and in many instances, we won't have all the information or see the full picture.

In those moments, we have to focus on making things clear - not simple - clear. â€‹

Clarity can be uncomfortable because there is nowhere to hide. Sometimes it means admitting there are gaps in our knowledge. It can feel overwhelming when you finally start to see the different parts and layers of a complex situation.

But at least in that moment, you can figure out some first steps and first questions to ask.

I believe clarity creates courage, builds compassion and invites everyone to be heard.

It's time to put aside the hashtag mentality. Instead, let's listen generously, be open to different thinking and embrace clarity.
